Although its limited access by live-aboard and its short diving season from March to June, Tubbataha Reef is probably the best reef in the Philippines. It lies about 200 kilometers southeast of Palawan Island and in 1994 it was declared a World Heritage Site.
Tubbataha Reef actually consists out of a northern and southern reef. The North Reef is about 5 kilometers wide while the southern one is only 2 kilometers wide. Both reefs enclose an island and are extremely shallow, with parts of the reef uncovered during low tide.
Since 1988, when the government was quite successful in stopping coral collection and illegal fishing, the reef is back in pristine conditions. A lot of life can be found, including sharks, rays and large pelagics.
