El Nido is one of the top tourist destinations in Palawan, the Philippines. Its main attractions are its many excellent white beaches, secluded islands, towering limestone cliffs and lush tropical rainforest. Many islands have become popular as a favorite holiday for both tourists and locals. The bays, inlets and islands in El Nido offer many different salt, brackish and sweet water lagoons that attract a very wide diversity of birdlife.
There are also many inland activities. The Lagen trail on Lagen Island is popular for naturalists as it is one of the best sites for bird watching and nesting. You can also wander around the Leta-Leta Cave where artifacts and other remains from prehistoric times have been found. Other archeological excavations are Cudugnon Point and Ille Cave at New Ibajay. You can book one of the many Aberawan River mangrove tours and spot many species of birds and other wildlife. Beaches in Matinloc include Secret Beach and Kulasa Beach, while Bocal Point, Natnat, Paradise Beach and Sabang Beach are some of the best beaches on Cadlao Island all situated in turquoise-green waters.
The largest islands in El Nido is Cadlao Island famous for its excellent scuba diving with over 200 varieties of tropical fish and white beaches. This ten square km large island offers short hiking trails and small lagoons such as famous Makaamo Lagoon. Another popular island is Dilumacad Island or Helicopter Island named after its resemblance when viewed from far away. There is a huge fringing reef in the south and a well known underwater tunnel in the north. Miniloc Island was the first location offered to tourists and sights not to miss are its many small and larger lagoons that are thought to be prehistoric caves before they collapsed. Pangalusian Island is one of the best white sanded islands perfect for snorkeling, beaching, swimming and diving completely surrounded by coral reefs. Other popular islands are the Calamianes Islands, Pinasil Island and Vigan Island or Snake Island with its s-shaped sandbar. Bacuit Bay, declared a marine reserve in 1991, is with its many small uninhabited islands and inlets a sight to behold, offering some of the best scuba diving worldwide.
